Shotgun

One pump, one blast, one very surprised bandit on the other side of a wooden wall.

Shotgun

The Shotgun is the trusty pump-action sidearm of every survivor's early days on the island. A single-shot, close-range weapon that rewards aggression and nerve, it is one of the first firearms a player can craft at a Workbench and a rite of passage in the brutal learning curve of Rust. Its thunderous blast and the satisfying *thunk-thunk* of the pump make it as much a sensory experience as a tool of war.

While it is quickly outclassed by rifles and shotguns of higher tier, the Shotgun holds a permanent place in the community's heart. It is the weapon you grab when you hear footsteps in a wooden shack, the weapon you trust to punch through a flimsy wall, and the weapon that turns a desperate close-quarters scramble into a glorious, shell-shaving brawl.

Lore & Background

In the scattered, half-remembered lore of the island, the Shotgun is a relic of the old world—mass-produced, utilitarian, and stubbornly alive long after the factories that made it crumbled into rust and salt. Survivors who find one in a derelict building or craft one from salvaged metal fragments and scrap wood treat it with a grudging respect: it is not elegant, it is not precise, but it will put a hole in whatever is in front of it.

The weapon's design is deceptively simple. A short barrel, a wooden forend you grip with one hand while the other works the pump, and a single chamber that loads a 12 gauge shell. There is no magazine to manage, no bolt to cycle—just the raw, percussive act of pulling the slide back, loading a shell, and pulling the trigger. In the chaos of a base raid or a hallway ambush in a small stone house, that simplicity is a feature, not a flaw.

Among the player community, the Shotgun has earned a reputation as the great equalizer. A player in full Tier 3 armor with a high-tier rifle can be dropped in a tight corridor by someone with nothing but a Shotgun and the courage to close the distance. It is the weapon of the desperate, the bold, and the slightly unhinged—and in Rust, those are the people who survive the longest.

In Their Own Story

The rain came sideways off the black water, turning the gravel path into a slick of grey mud. Mara crouched behind the overturned truck, her fingers white-knuckled on the pump of the Shotgun. She could hear them—two sets of boots, crunching through the underbrush maybe fifteen meters out, laughing about something. They thought the wooden shack was abandoned. They thought the single window, the one with the broken pane, was just a broken window.

She counted their steps. One. Two. Three. The door creaked. She pulled the slide back, felt the cold steel of the chamber, and pushed the shell home with her thumb. The *clack* was small, almost polite, swallowed by the rain. The door swung wide. A face appeared, grinning, holding a rifle.

Mara didn't grin back. She pulled the trigger.

The blast was less a sound and more a pressure, a wall of hot gas and lead that turned the grin into something else entirely. The man went backward through the doorway and into the dark. His partner's boots stopped crunching. Silence, except for the rain and the slow drip of water off the Shotgun's barrel.

Mara pumped it once more, just out of habit. Then she shouldered it and walked into the shack to check the other rooms. There was always another room.

Reader's Guide

The Shotgun is a Tier 1 pump-action that you craft at a Workbench using metal fragments, wood, and cloth. It fires a single 12 gauge shotgun shell per shot and requires you to pull the pump to reload, making it a deliberate, close-quarters weapon rather than a rapid-fire tool.

In a loadout, the Shotgun slots in as your primary or secondary when you are inside a base, in a tight stone or wooden structure, or closing the gap on a target. Pair it with a pistol or a rifle for mid-range coverage, and stock up on 12 gauge shells—each one is a commitment. Because it is single-shot, you will feel the reload delay, so position yourself where you can fire and pump without exposing yourself.

In the current meta, the Shotgun is no longer a raid weapon. Tier 2 and Tier 3 rifles, along with the upgraded shotguns, outperform it in almost every sustained-combat scenario. However, it still shines in specific niches: punching through wooden walls during a surprise entry, holding a narrow corridor in a small base, or serving as a reliable backup when your primary runs dry. If you are a new player or playing on a fresh server, the Shotgun is the weapon that carries you from the first day of scavenging until you can craft something better.

Tip: the spread is wide at very close range, so aim slightly above the target's center mass. And always keep a few shells in your pocket for the moment someone kicks your door in.
