Bandage

Ten strips of cloth between you and the dirt.

Bandage

The Bandage is the most basic medical consumable in Rust, a simple strip of woven cloth that players craft from Cloth to patch up minor injuries. It occupies a humble but essential place in every survivor's early-game kit, representing the first line of defense against bleeding out in a world where a single bad fall or a stray spear can end a run before it truly begins.

Because it is a Tier 1 item requiring only Cloth, the Bandage is one of the first useful things a new player can produce after gathering a few resources. While it pales in comparison to Medkits or Bandage Packs, its low cost and wide availability make it the default 'oh no, I'm losing health' response during the fragile opening hours on a fresh server.

Lore & Background

In the Rust world, medicine is not something you buy at a pharmacy. It is something you tear from your own shirt, weave from plant fiber, and press against a wound while your hands shake. The Bandage embodies that brutal simplicity: no sterile packaging, no dosing instructions, just a rough band of cloth that slows the red seep and buys you enough seconds to crawl back to your shelter.

Veterans on long-lived servers often joke that the Bandage is the true currency of the early game. You do not hoard it for yourself; you trade it, barter it, or throw it at a fellow survivor who is bleeding out in the open. A single Bandage can be the difference between a new player who logs off in frustration and one who stays, builds a wall, and eventually learns to make a spear. In that sense, the humblest item in the crafting tree carries an outsized social weight.

As servers progress and players unlock Tier 2 and Tier 3 healing options, the Bandage fades into the background. Yet it never disappears. It lingers in the corners of storage, in the pockets of new players, in the desperate inventory of someone who just got ambushed outside a Tier 3 base and has nothing else to press against the wound. It is the game's quiet reminder that survival, at its core, is still just cloth and willpower.

In Their Own Story

The rain had been falling for two hours, turning the dirt path into brown slurry. Kael's left hand was a mess of torn skin where the rusted rebar had caught him as he scrambled over the collapsed overpass. He could feel the warm pulse of it soaking through his fingers, each beat a small red dot on the grey concrete.

He dropped to his knees. Pulled the Bandage from his inventory—just a strip of pale, slightly frayed cloth, no bigger than his thumb. He wrapped it around his hand, tight, tighter, until the pressure bit back the flow. The pain dulled to a manageable throb. He could still feel the cold rain on his face, the distant groan of wind through the skeletal remains of the parking structure.

He stood. The shelter was four hundred meters south. He had maybe six minutes before the bleeding started all over again. He started walking, one hand pressed flat against his thigh to steady himself, the other still wrapped in that stupid little strip of cloth that was, right now, the only thing between him and the ground.

Reader's Guide

The Bandage is a Tier 1 consumable crafted from Cloth. It slots into your general inventory and is used by selecting it and pressing the use key, restoring a small amount of health over a brief moment. It is not a weapon, not a tool, and does not occupy any dedicated slot.

In a loadout, the Bandage belongs in your early-game 'just in case' pocket. Pair it with a wooden spear, a small pile of resources, and a torch, and you have a viable first-hour kit. It does not replace a Medkit once you can craft one, but it is far cheaper to produce and far more likely to be sitting in your inventory when you are three hours into a fresh server and still fumbling with the crafting menu.

Meta standing: the Bandage is effectively obsolete past the first few hours. Once players have access to Medkits, Bandage Packs, or the more efficient healing options, the Bandage becomes a novelty or a trade token. However, on servers with heavy early PvP or on very fresh maps where Tier 2 crafting is not yet available, a stack of Bandages can be the difference between surviving a first encounter and respawning with nothing. Carry two or three. They weigh almost nothing, and you will not regret having them when the first spear finds your shoulder.
