Thirst is one of Rust's foundational survival statistics, sitting alongside Hunger, Health, and Stamina as a constant pressure on every player. Represented by a bar in the HUD, it steadily drains over time and, when it hits zero, begins dealing passive health damage that can quickly become lethal if ignored. Managing thirst forces players to plan routes around water sources, carry drinkable items, and balance exploration against the need to hydrate.

In practice, Thirst is the stat that punishes carelessness most quietly. A player can survive a firefight, a long trek, or a base raid, only to slowly bleed out on a ridge miles from the nearest river. It interlocks with Stamina (a dehydrated player regenerates slower) and with the broader resource loop, since carrying water jugs or bottles occupies inventory slots that might otherwise hold building materials, ammunition, or tools.

The drain rate is slow enough that a single water source visit can sustain you for a long trek, but fast enough that it becomes a real planning constraint during multi-hour sessions or long-distance travel. The key interlock is Stamina: a dehydrated player regenerates stamina more slowly, which in turn affects sprinting, climbing, and combat mobility. Health loss at zero thirst is the hard cap—you will eventually die if you ignore it long enough.
