It is the first time a player looks at a flat expanse of terrain or a single-level shelter and thinks, 'I need a second floor.' Whether it is propped against the side of a wooden wall to reach a rooftop watchpost, laid across a narrow ravine to connect two outposts, or simply stacked to create a small staircase into a raised sleeping area, the ramp transforms a static structure into a living, navigable space.

You crouched behind the half-finished wall of your wooden shelter, listening to the drip-drip-drip of water off the canvas roof, and counted the logs you had left. Twelve. Enough for one more ramp, maybe two, if you were careful with the joints.
You unslung your hatchet, felt the familiar weight of it, and looked up at the gap between the ground and the platform you'd lashed together on the tree trunk above. Three meters. A person could climb it with their hands, sure, but not while carrying a rifle and a bag of scavenged parts. Not while someone might be watching from the ridge.
You set the first plank. Then the second. The wood was wet, slick, and it kept sliding. You cursed, repositioned, braced it against the wall with a spare log. Your fingers were numb. The rain was getting worse.
When the last piece clicked into place, you stood at the bottom and looked up. The ramp was ugly. It was crooked. It would probably collapse if a bear walked across it.
